Iga Swiatek (Poland) won the title at the WTA Finals in Cancun after defeating Jessica Pegula (USA) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:0) in only 60 minutes of play. Thus, the Polish tennis player, triumphed with the title for the first time in her career without losing a set in the tournament and winning all her matches. Also, Iga Swiatek returned as world’s number one in the WTA ranking and will finish the year in the top of the women’s tennis.

The match was under the total control of Iga Swiatek, who gave only 1 game to her American opponent in the second game of the match. Since then she won 11 consecutive games, giving 5 points in the first set and 10 points in the second set to Jessica Pegula. Iga Swiatek made one ace and nine winners, while her opponent recorded one double fault and 23 unforced errors.

“To be back at the top is definitely a dream come true. I would say I didn’t expect it right now, this season. I was hoping that maybe next year would be my year, but when you work hard and focus on the right things in the end everything is happening. I’m really very happy”, said Iga Swiatek.

After dropping out in the fourth round of the US Open, where she lost her top WTA position, the Polish tennis player won the titles in Beijing and Cancun and went on a 12-match winning streak in 13 matches, including 11 in a row.

Iga Swiatek won the 17th trophy of her career and dropped just 20 games in Cancun, the most dominant performance in the tournament since the group stage was reintroduced in 2003.

Facing Pegula for the fourth time this season, the 22-year-old Iga Swiatek recorded her fifth win in eight matches against the American player, who has beaten her twice this year. The Pole won her first title of the season in Doha, dropping just three games in the final against Jessica Pegula.

Thus, Iga Swiatek climbed back to the top of the WTA ranking after winning the title and defeating Aryna Sabalenka, formed world’s number one, in the semi-finals. On the other hand, Jessica Pegula remains fifth in the WTA ranking after Cori Coco Gauff and Elena Rybakina.
