The world’s number two Iga Swiatek (Poland) started strongly at the WTA Finals in Cancun (Mexico). The Polish tennis player defeated Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) by 2-0 (7:6, 6:0) in 1:40 hours in the first match from the Group B of the prestigious tournament with a prize pool of 9 million USD.
The 2023 Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic started strongly with a early break and took a lead by 2:0, but the former world’s number one returned the break and equalized to 2:2. Marketa Vondrousova made another great rally with two breaks and again was ahead in the score by 5:2 and she even served for the set, but Iga Swiatek returned a break won her serve game and made another break, all “on 15”, to again equalize the score to 5:5. Both players won their next games to enter into a tiebreak, which Iga Swiatek eventually won by 7-3.
This was a cornerstone in the match, as Marketa Vondrousova was not able to oppose the Polish player and made 13 fnforced errors in the second set, losing it by 0:6.
Thus, Iga Swiatek started very strong her participation in the Year-End WTA Championships in Cancun and won the match by 2-0 (7:6, 6:0), giving her a great chance to qualify for the semi-finals.
“Even in the first set of the match, I didn’t feel like I was playing bad. I just felt like I was making mistakes at the end of the plays. There was definitely an option to improve my game, but I didn’t have to change much. So I just wanted to be more precise and more solid, not to play risky”, commented Iga Swiatek after the match.
