The Polish tennis player and leader in the WTA ranking Iga Swiatek defeated the Italian Jasmine Paolini with 2-0 (6:3, 6:0) and qualified for the second round of the US Open 2022.
Iga Swiatek looked in fine form in her first match on the US Open. She won the last seven games against Jasmine Paolini and in the next round she will face Sloane Stephens, who prevailed by 2-1 (1:6, 6:3, 6:3) against the Belgian Greet Minnen.
Iga Swiatek is a major favorite for this year’s title after completely dominating Roland Garros and snapping a 37-game winning streak that was halted in the third round at Wimbledon. However, in the last eight matches before the US Open 2022, she has a 4-4 record.
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic also advanced to the second round after a win versus Andrea Petkovic by 2-1 (6:2, 4;6, 6:4). In the next round she will face the Romanian Sorana Cîrstea, who defeated Laura Siegemund by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4).
The 4th-seeded Paula Badosa also qualified for the second round after a win versus Lesia Tsurenko by 2-1 (3:6, 7:6, 6:3). In the next round she will face Petra Martic, who defeated Varvara Gracheva by 2-0 (6:4, 7:6).
The Belarusian tennis player and runner-up from last week’s WTA 250 Tennis in the Land, Aliaksandra Sasnovich, qualified for the second round after a win versus Elisabetta Cocciaretto by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4).
