Iga Swiatek qualified for the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. The top-seeded Polish tennis player prevailed hardly after turnover of 2-1 (6:7, 7:6, 6:3) against the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.
The world number one saved two match points on her own forehand in the second set to make her debut appearance in the top eight at the British Open. There were no breaks in the first set and the Swiss won the tiebreak with 7-4. Iga Swiatek then took a 3:1 lead but conceded a 3:3 tie. At 6:5 for Belinda Bencic, the Polish tennis player managed two match points to reach a new tiebreak, won by her with a decisive 7-2. In the final set, Iga Swiatek won 3:1 the opening game of the 14th-seeded Belinda Bencic, after which she did not allow any more surprises on her own serve.
The Polish tennis player, who does not yet have a single title on grass, will play either Elina Svitolina or Victoria Azarenka in the next round.
Iga Swiatek is currently ranked world No 1 in singles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). She is a four-time major singles champion, having won the French Open in 2020, 2022, and 2023 and the US Open in 2022. She is the first player representing Poland to win a major singles title. She has won a total of 14 WTA Tour–level titles.
