The leader in the world rankings and top-seeded at the Paris 2024 Olympics tennis tournament Iga Swiatek (Poland) qualified for the quarterfinals in the Games.
Iga Swiatek recorded a third victory in the French capital after prevailing over Wang Xiyu (China) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) in 1:51 hours.
The Polish tennis player, who is a four-time Roland Garros champion, had a break in the sixth game on her way to a first-set victory. In the second set, it was evenly played until 4:4, after which Iga Swiatek took the serve of her rival in the ninth game and closed the match with her serve.
In the quarterfinals, the Polish tennis player will face Danielle Collins (USA).
Two of the top-seeds left the competition. The 4th-seeded Jasmine Paolini (Italy) lost to Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (Slovakia) after 1-2 (5:7, 6:3, 5:7).
Jasmine Paolini’s dream of an Olympic medal, after reaching the finals of the French Open and Wimbledon this year, is still alive as she continues into the quarter-finals of the doubles with Sara Errani.
“She was definitely more consistent than me today, also more focused. I’m a bit disappointed with the match, but it’s tennis, anything can happen, so now I have to focus on the doubles”, said Jasmine Paolini.
“It was very difficult, very hot. I didn’t have much strength at the end, but I made some brave decisions and it worked out. I just had nothing to lose”, said Anna Karolina Schmiedlova.
Seventh-seeded Maria Sakkari (Greece) lost to Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) by 1-2 (6:4, 6:7, 4:6).
The Wimbledon champion and ninth-seeded Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic) eliminated Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) after 2-1 (7:6, 2:6, 6:4) and also continues to the quarterfinals.
