The top-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland) qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Canadian Open after defeating Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (6:1, 4:6, 6:4) in match that lasted almost 3 hours.
The match started perfectly for the world’s number one, who closed the first set in only 45 minutes after recording two breaks. The second set, however, she started making mistakes on first serve and Karolina Muchova broke her in the fourth game on zero and thus took a lead of 3:1. After exchange of breaks in the end of the set, the Czech player finally took the victory by 6:4 and equalized the score. In the decisive third set, Iga Swiatek made an early break and saved two break points to close it by 6:4 and win the match.
In the quarter-finals, she will face Danielle Collins (USA), who eliminated Leylah Fernandez (Canada) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) in only 1:21 hours.
The 4th-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) also did not faced any problems to defeat Jasmine Paolini Italy) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:0) and in the quarter-finals will face the 6th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA), who is on fire after winning the title at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open last week and today eliminated the 9th-seeded and Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:0).
The 3rd-seeded Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) also advanced to the quarter-finals after winning her match versus Sloane Stephens (USA) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3) and will face Daria Kasatkina (Russia), who eliminated Marie Bouzkova (Czech Republic) after 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).
