Last year’s US Open champion Iga Swiatek ended her title defense already at the Round of 16 of the tournament. The Polish tennis player again failed to beat Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) and left the tournament. The top-seeded tennis player suffered a turnover and lost by 1-2 (6:3, 3:6, 1:6) to her rival. It was Iga Swiatek’s fourth loss to Jelena Ostapenko in the fourth match between them.
The match began with an exchange of breaks, with Jelena Ostapenko first pulling out her opponent’s serve, but immediately allowing her to be broken for 1:1. Several games followed, in which each won the own serve, before in the sixth game Iga Swiatek made a second break, which turned out to be decisive, to take the set 6:3.
However, the second set started badly for the Polish tennis player, who allowed an early breakthrough and trailed 0:3. She managed to rally and break back in the seventh game to make it 3:4, but was broken again soon after and eventually Jelena Ostapenko took the set and leveled the match 6:3 in her favor.
In the third set, Iga Swiatek’s play completely collapsed and she allowed herself to fall behind 0:5. The 22-year-old tennis player rallied to one game for 1:5, breaking her opponent’s serve, but in the next game Jelena Ostapenko finished the Pole with another break and made the final 6:1 in her favor, thus winning the match.
Thus, the 26-year-old Latvian will play for the first time in her career in the quarter-finals of the US Open. There she will compete with Cori Coco Gauff.
