Iga Swiatek: I want to play well on all surfaces

Iga Swiatek recovered quickly and is optimistic that she will perform strongly at the Wimbledon Tennis Tornament. The women’s world number one won her third French Open title in four years in Paris three weeks ago and is aiming to lift the Wimbledon trophy after also winning the US Open on hard courts last year.

The Polish tennis player withdrew before the semi-finals of the grass-court tournament WTA 250 Bad Homburg Open on Friday with a virus and food poisoning, but was training today at Wimbledon and was feeling fine.

“I had a really bad night on Thursday. In the morning we took measurements with my conditioning coach and they really didn’t look good because I hardly slept”, commented Iga Swiatek. “I had stomach pains, but I don’t know if it was something more serious or not. I felt fine later in the day, so I’m on the mend. I used my time in Bad Homburg well to train and get used to the grass courts. I feel like every year I get into a rhythm a little bit faster. So I feel like I’m ready and I’m pretty excited before this tournament”, added she.

Last year, Iga Swiatek was eliminated in the third round of Wimbledon after losing to Alize Cornet (France). She is the maiden champion at the London tournament.

“For a few years I felt really good on grass, like when I was a maiden, but then I had a few tournaments where I was hoping to play a little bit better. For sure, getting used to grass was always the hardest part because when you play well at Roland Garros, then you have less time to prepare for Wimbledon”, said Iga Swiatek. “Last year, when I didn’t play any matches before Wimbledon, it was difficult to use my intuition because there was pressure. I felt that I was playing in a Grand Slam tournament, I played so well at Roland Garros, that I have to play well and here too. But it’s different. Your brain has to feel that the ball is bouncing lower. You can’t think about those things during a game. So this year it’s going to be easier for me to use my intuition a little bit more”, added the Polish tennis player.

Iga Swiatek is top-seeded at Wimbledon main scheme and will start her participation in the tournament versus the Zhu Lin (China).

“I believe that the best tennis players can play on any surface. I want to become the kind of player who can play well on grass and feel comfortable. Last year we did a pretty good job with my coach. This year we had more time to focus on the main thing – more time to play matches. I used that time as much as possible”, she said.
