Iga Swiatek: I did my best at the Australian Open

Iga Swiatek

The 20-year-old Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek, who was eliminated in the semifinals of the Australian Open after losing to American Danielle Collins with 0-2 (4:6, 1:6), said it was her best result on hard courts, apart from the triumph in Adelaide.

“I mean, I don’t know if winning Adelaide is a better result than the semi-finals here in Melbourne. So I think reaching the semi-finals is a positive thing. I’ve always wanted to improve on hard courts. Both physically and mentally. I did my best during the tournament”, said Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek. “I am very happy that I managed to play aggressively and perform well on the fast pavement. Maybe not today, but in general”, added she.

Asked about her prediction for the final between Ashleigh Barty and Danielle Collins, Iga Swiatek said: “Ashleigh plays differently. She is different from any other tennis player. She is currently number one, so she is very likely to find a solution for Danielle’s game”.

Iga Swiatek is the youngest player in the top ten of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings, and has a career-high ranking of No 4 in the world. She was the champion at the 2020 French Open and is the first Polish player to win a Grand Slam singles title. With her French Open title, she also became the youngest singles champion at the tournament since Rafael Nadal in 2005, and the youngest women’s singles champion at a major since Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon 2004.
