Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka to play for the titles at the WTA Finals in Cancun

Iga Swiatek (Poland) defeated the world’s number one and top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in Cancun. The Polish tennis player won by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) in a match that lasted 1:37 hours.

Both players won their serve games after Iga Swiatek was leading by 2:1 in the first set when the rain interrupted the match at 30-30 in the fourth game. After resuming the match Aryna Sabalenka served to equalize but Iga Swiatek took advantage of the interruption and succeeded in winning the next two points and broke the serve of her opponent. In the fifth game, the Polish player saved a breakpoint, but finally won the game and extended her lead to 4:1. This proved to be enough for her to close the set at 6:3.

The second set started with both players won fast their serve games. The third game was the longest and the cornerstone for winning the set, as Aryna Sabalenka saved three breakpoints, but at the end Iga Swiatek succeeded in breaking her serve and took a lead of 2:1, which she extended to 3:1 after winning her serve game. Thus, the Polish tennis player used the impetus in her game and made another break in the seventh game to lead by 5:2 and close the set at 6:2.

Thus, Iga Swiatek qualified for the title match of the WTA Finals in Cancun, where she will face Jessica Pegula (USA).
