The Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek and the Spanish player Paula Badosa became the last two quarter-finalists at the clay tennis tournament WTA 1000 Rome Open.
The world’s number one Iga Swiatek prevailed by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) over Donna Vekic (Croatia) and continues her way to a third consecutive title in the Italian capital.
Iga Swiatek, who gave only two games to her opponents in her first two matches, had some fluctuations in her play, which showed up more seriously in the first set. In it, the Polish tennis player led by 4:1, but in two consecutive games she allowed Donna Vekic to reach breakpoints, and the second time the Croatian managed to realize her third break point and reduce it to 3:4. However, she immediately after that, the top-seeded Iga Swiatek made a new break and closed the first set.
The second set was played game for game until 4:4 when Iga Swiatek broke through to take the lead. In the last game of the match, she reflected the two break points for Donna Vekic and closed the match with her first match point.
Iga Swiatek will play against Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan) in the quarterfinals.
Paula Badosa took last place in the Top 8 of the WTA 1000 Rome Open, defeating Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (6:4, 6:7, 6:2).
In the first two sets, the breaks followed each other in both directions, and, logically, the two tennis players exchanged one set each. In the third set, however, Paula Badosa was much fresher and more focused and did not let her serve slip once. On the other hand, she broke Karolina Muchova’s serve twice and recorded her first victory over the Czech in the second clash between them.
Paula Badosa will face former French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia) in the quarterfinals.
