French Open finalists Iga Swiatek and Karolina Muchova advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Cincinnati.
In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded Iga Swiatek defeated Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova by 2-0 (7:6, 6:1) in 1:33 hours of play.
There was no lack of intrigue in the first set, as the 10th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova twice led with a break. The Czech tennis player had a 5:3 game lead as well as a 6:5 lead, but in both of her opportunities to serve to win the set, Iga Swiatek broke.
In the tiebreak, the Polish tennis player had a psychological advantage and took it with 7-3 points.
This gave Iga Swiatek extra confidence and in the second set she gave only one game to her opponent.
In the other quarterfinal, Karolina Muchova cruised to victory without any effort. In an all-Czech clash, she was leading 3:0 in the first set against Marie Bouzkova when her opponent withdrew due to injury.
