The top-seeded and world’s number one Iga Swiatek (Poland) qualified for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships after defeating Elina Svitolina (Ukraine) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) in a match that lasted 1:25 hours.
Iga Swiatek made two breaks in the first set, which were enough for her to close it by 6:1 in less than half an hour. In the second set, however, Elina Svitolina showed better play and was stronger opponent. Although the Polish tennis player started with a break and twice took a lead in the set, her Ukrainian opponent equalized to 2:2 and 4:4. At the end, the world’s number one made another break and succeeded to close the set at 6:4.
In the next round, Iga Swiatek will face the 6th-seeded Qinwen Zheng (China), who eliminated Anastasia Potapova (Russia) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2).
Sorana Cirstea (Romania) also advanced to the next round after defeating Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 7:5), as well as the third-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA), who eliminated Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) by 2-1 (2:6, 6:4, 6:3).
