Iga Swiatek admitted that too many mistakes caused her loss to Jessica Pegula at the WTA 1000 Canadian Open semi

Iga Swiatek Canadian Open

Iga Swiatek said after her loss to Jessica Pegula that she made too many mistakes, but immediately after the match it was difficult for her to determine the exact reasons for what happened.

“The intensity in the match was very high, even though I didn’t start well. We made some breakthroughs in the first minutes of the match, but then she pushed me and made me look for a change. That worked out in the second set, but I don’t know what happened in the third set. I have to watch the match again and analyze the reasons because both she and I fought for every point. It was a tough game for sure”, said Iga Swiatek.

For Iga Swiatek, the match with Jessica Pegula was an anti-record in terms of allowed breaks – 11. Never in her career at the WTA level had she lost her serve so many times.

“At certain times I made too many mistakes. I think that was the mistake. I don’t know exactly, I just finished the match, but I knew this could happen. I tried to play aggressively at times, but there were times when I didn’t make the right decisions”, said also the world’s number one Iga Swiatek.

When asked if the constant change of balls in tournaments played a role, Iga Swiatek said: “Of course there is change, so we always change everything. Our job is to adapt to the conditions and technically adjust our style of play to the balls of each tournament”.

“Physically, it was a tough tournament for me, especially the match against Karolina Pliskova, which was postponed several times because of the rain. I had no time to rest during the tournament. It wasn’t easy, but that doesn’t change the fact that I fought to get to the finish. The match today was tough physically, we only had 16 hours to recover, I didn’t sleep well. This is the life of a tennis player, I did my best. I was not fresh, but physicality is not the reason for losing matches. I don’t think that had an impact”, added she.
