Hellen Obiri won the New York Half Marathon setting a new course record

The world’s 10,000m silver medalist Hellen Obiri won the New York Half Marathon in a new course record. Hellen Obiri, who is the 2017 and 2019 5,000m world champion, clocked 1:07:21 hours. It was her sixth half-marathon victory.

The Kenyan improved the previous course record by 14 sec.

Hellen Obiri beat defending champion Senbere Teferi of Ethiopia, who finished second in 1:07:55 hours. The third place was taken by the Norwegian Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal with 1:09:53 hours.

Hellen Obiri is a Kenyan middle- and long-distance runner. She is a two-time Olympic 5,000m silver medallist from the Rio 2016 and 2020 Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she also placed fourth over the 10,000m. She is a two-time world champion after winning the 5,000m in 2017 and again in 2019 when she set a new championship record. Hellen Obiri also took bronze for the 1,500m in 2013 and silver in the 10,000m in 2022. She won the 3,000m race at the 2012 World Indoor Championships, claimed silver in 2014, and placed fourth in 2018. She holds the Kenyan national records for the mile, 3,000m both out and indoors, and 5,000m events.

Hellen Obiri won the women’s race at the 2019 World Cross Country Championship. She places fifth in the half marathon on the world’s all-time list.
