Heidi Weng will not travel to Beijing for the Olympics

Norwegian cross-country skier Heidi Weng will not travel to Beijing to compete in the 2022 Winter Olympics. She tested positive for COVID-19, the athlete herself confirmed.

The 2014 bronze medalist and five-time world champion was infected after a training camp in Italy, and her coach Ole Morten Iversen said she could miss the Games.

“The dream of revenge at the Olympics was shattered for me. It’s just an Olympics, but I’m still sad”, wrote Weng wrote on Instagram.

Heidi Weng is a Norwegian cross-country skier and fell runner. In cross-country skiing, her best individual World Cup finish is her victories in Tour de Ski both 2016–17 and 2017–18. She has won three gold medals at the Junior World Championships, two in the relay and one in pursuit. She has won six medals at the World Championships, four of them gold. She is a Norwegian senior champion in fell running in 2010, and placed fourth at the World Junior Championships in the same year. She is also a Norwegian junior champion in cross-country running.

Heidi Weng won the bronze medal at the skiathlon event at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
