Heidi Weng may skip Beijing 2022 Olympics due to quarantine risk

Heidi Weng

Norwegian cross-country skier Heidi Weng may decide not to travel to the Beijing 2022 Olympics if there is a risk of being quarantined in China, said her coach Ole Morten Iversen.

The Sochi 2014 bronze medalist and five-time world champion tested positive for coronavirus during Norway’s training camp in Italy. Her quarantine is expected to end on Thursday, the day before the opening ceremony of the Games.

Iversen told that the 30-year-old cross-country skier could miss Beijing 2022 Olympics because of the possibility of being quarantined again.

“Heidi is worried that the virus may be detected in China. The result of a test may be positive and two hours later negative. Those who arrive here will face this uncertainty. Heidi will not travel if there is a risk of quarantining the hotel”, added the coach.

Heidi Weng tested positive with teammate Anne Kjersti Kalvaa and Simen Hegstad Krueger, and coach Arild Monsen.

“I’m happy to be here, but I thought I was done with the Olympics’, added Ole Morten Iversen.

Heidi Weng has won six medals at the World Championships, four of them gold. She is a Norwegian senior champion in fell running in 2010 and placed fourth at the World Junior Championships in the same year. She is also a Norwegian junior champion in cross-country running. Heidi Weng won the bronze medal at the skiathlon event at the Sochi 2014 Olympics.
