Gudaf Tsegay won the women’s 5,000m world title at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. The Ethiopian, who also took the silver in the 1,500m in the USA, fought for the gold medal with 14:46.29 min.
The 2018 U20 World Champion Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) took the silver medal in 14:46.75 min. The trio was completed by another Ethiopian – Dawit Seyaum, who finished in 14:47.36 min.
The 2019 Doha 2019 champion on 5,000m and 10,000m Sifan Hassan tried an attack in the final meters but was unable to sustain the pace and finished sixth in 14:48.12 min.
Gudaf Tsegay Desta is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist in the women’s 5,000m. At the World Athletics Championships, she won a bronze for the 1,500m in 2019.
