Gudaf Tsegay won the 5,000m gold at the Diamond League Final in Eugene with a new world record

The 2022 Eugene 5,000m and 2023 Budapest 10,000m world champion Gudaf Tsegay produced an impressive 5,000m run at the Diamond League Final in Eugene to break the world record in the event. The 26-year-old Ethiopian athlete, who is also Tokyo2020 Olympics bronze medalist, recorded extremely strong last two laps and is now No 1 in the all-time ranking of the discipline with 14:00.21 min.

She trimmed just over 12 sec off her personal best and knocked nearly 5 sec off Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon’s world record (14:05.20 min) set earlier this year.

Beatrice Chebet also came close to Faith Kipyegon’s world record and with a personal record of 14:05.92 min finished in the second position. The third place was again for Ethiopian athlete, Ejgayehu Taye, with 14:21.52 min.

Earlier, Faith Kipyegon won the 1,500m gold with 3:50.72 min, setting a meeting record. The silver in the event went to Diribe Melteji (Ethiopia) with a personal best of 3:53.93 min and the bronze was for Laura Muir (UK) with 3:55.16 min.

In the 3,000m steeplechase, the woner went to Winfred Mutile Yavi (Brunei) with 8:50.66 min, while the silver as for Beatrice Chepkoech (Kenya) with 8:51.67 min and Faith Cherotich (Kenya) with 8:59.65 min.
