Gudaf Tsegay won the 5,000m gold at London Diamond League with a new meeting record

The Eugene 2022 World 5,000m champion Gudaf Tsegay won the gold at London Diamond League with a new meeting record. The Ethiopian prevailed with a personal best of 14:12.29 min. Last year’s Eugene 2022 World 5,000m runner-up Beatrice Chebet (Kenya) also improved her personal best to second place with 14:12.92 min.

The Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020 Sifan Hassan finished third with a personal best of 14:13.42 min, which is also a new European record in the discipline.

Gudaf Tsegay is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist in the women’s 5,000m. At the World Athletics Championships, Tsegay won a bronze for the 1,500m in 2019, as well as the silver in the 1,500m and gold for the 5,000m in 2022. She is a two-time World Indoor Championship 1,500m medalist, claiming bronze in 2016 and gold in 2022. She is the world indoor record holder for the 1,500m, setting previously in this event world U18 (current) and U20 (former) records.

At age 16, Gudaf Tsegay represented Ethiopia in the 1,500m at the 2014 World Indoor Championships. That same year, the 17-year-old won the silver medal in the discipline at the World U20 Championships. She is a versatile runner. As of June 2023, she was the world’s 10th fastest woman in the indoor 800m, seventh in the 5,000m and sixth in the 10,000m.
