The 5,000m World Champion and 1,500m Silver medalist from 2019 Doha World Athletics Championship Gudaf Tsegay (Ethiopia) won first place at the Diamond League in Rabat (Morocco) in 1,500m, setting a world best result of 3:54.03 min. She improved the tournament record of Genzebe Dibaba, who had 3:54.03 min fin rom 2019.
“This was my first outdoor competition of the season, so I’m more than happy with the time and the victory”, said Tsegay. “I’m already in great shape and injury free. So far, all is perfect”, added she.
Ethiopian women also completed top 4 in the race. Freweyni Hailu won the silver with 3:57.65 min, and Berke Hayelom came third with a personal best of 3:57.66 min. Worknesh Mesele finished in fourth place with 4:01.81 min.
Gudaf Tsegay is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medalist in the women’s 5,000m. At the World Athletics Championships, she won a bronze for the 1,500m in 2019 and a silver in this event and gold for the 5,000m in 2022. Gudaf Tsegay is a two-time 1,500m World Indoor Championship medalist, winning gold in 2022 and bronze in 2016. She is the current world record holder in the indoor 1,500m, the event in which she also set world U18 (current) and U20 records.
