A world record attempt by Gudaf Tsegay and some high-quality clashes between major medalists are expected at the ORLEN Copernicus Cup, the third tournament of the 2023 World Indoor Athletics Tour in Torun tomorrow.
Polish sprint star Ewa Swoboda takes on world indoor champion Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland in the 60m, while another local favourite, Pia Skrzyszowska, will face Jamaican 100m hurdles silver medalist Brittany Anderson in the 60m hurdles.
After breaking the world indoor 1500m record with a 3:53.09 min in Liewin in 2021, Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay has set her sights on the world indoor one-mile record of 4:13.31 min set by Genzebe Dibaba in 2016.
Gudaf Tsegay is an Ethiopian middle- and long-distance runner. She is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist in the women’s 5000m. At the World Athletics Championships, she won a bronze for the 1500m in 2019 and a silver in this event and gold for the 5000m in 2022. Gudaf Tsegay is a two-time 1500m World Indoor Championship medallist, winning gold in 2022 and bronze in 2016. She is the current world record holder in the indoor 1500m, the event in which she also set world under-18 (current) and U20 records.
At age 17, she was the 2014 World Junior Championship 1500 m silver medalist. She represented her country over the distance at the 2014 World Indoor Championships. Gudaf Tsegay is a versatile runner. As of September 2022, she was the world’s 10th fastest woman in the indoor 800 metres, and sixth for both the 5000 m and 10,000 metres.
