The 2021 Roland Garros champion Barbora Krejcikova (Czech Republic), was eliminated at the start of the tournament in Paris, losing to the Swiss tennis player Viktorija Golubic by 0-2 (6:7, 4:6).
It was one of the few surprises at the start of the year’s second Grand Slam tournament. Barbora Krejcikova is a former world number two, but is currently ranked No 26 in the WTA rankings.
Viktorija Golubic recorded only one break more than her Czech opponent, five versus four, and won the first set after tiebreak by 7-3. In the second set, an early break for the Swiss player gave her an advance, but Barbora Krejcikova equalized for 4:4. However, Viktorija Golubic made another break and closed the set by 6:4 and the match by 2-0 in her favor.
The qualifier Olga Danilovic (Serbia) defeated Martina Trevisan (Italy) by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2), while Wang Xinyu (China) made a comeback again Jule Niemeier (Germany) to win by 2-1 (0:6, 6:2, 6:4).
In the final match of the women’s evening session on Sunday, Katie Volynets (USA) defeated the Croatian qualifier Aleksandra Krunic by 2-0 (7:6, 6:2).
