Five American players in the WTA Top 15 for the first time in 20 years

WTA players

For the first time since 2004, the USA has five tennis players in the Top 15 of the WTA rankings. With the highest ranking is the reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff, who occupies the second position. Jessica Pegula is No 6, Danielle Collins is No 9, Madison Keys is No 14, and Emma Navarro is No 15.

The last time five American women were ranked in the Top 15 was in 2004 with Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, Jennifer Capriati and Chanda Rubin.

Cori Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys started the 2024 season in the Top 15. The latter two managed to hold onto their positions despite being overtaken by injuries. Jessica Pegula won her first clay title last month in Berlin, Germany, while Madison Keys enjoyed an outstanding clay court season marked by a semi-final in Madrid, a quarter-final in Rome and a title in Strasbourg.

Cori Coco Gauff, on the other hand, climbed to a record second place, after recording a third consecutive semi-final at a Grand Slam tournament at Roland Garros.

The 30-year-old Danielle Collins, whose current season is the last of her career, returned to the Top 10 after winning her first WTA 1000-level title at the Miami Open and extending her winning streak with a title in Charlton. She also played in the final in Strasbourg, which she lost to Madison Keys.

Emma Navarro’s steady ascent culminated in her first Slam quarter-final appearance at Wimbledon, where she defeated Cori Coco Gauff en route. Emma Navarro is the 2021 US college champion and won her first WTA title in January in Hobart. In April, she debuted in the Top 10.

Cori Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins and Navarro will represent the US at the Paris 2024 Olympics later this month.
