Italian Alpine skier Federica Brignone, who won the women’s alpine combined world title, expressed great satisfaction with her skiing in the first start of the championship in the French resorts of Courchevel and Meribel. Federica Brignone, 32, took the first gold of her career at the world championships, beating second-placed Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by more than a second and a half.
“I had two excellent runs in both the super giant slalom and the slalom. I’ve been missing a world championship gold medal in my career so far, so I’m very excited about this achievement”, said Federica Brignone “I’m very happy with the concentration I showed and the behavior I had in both heats. That was the most important thing”, added she.
Federica Brignone is an Italian World Cup alpine ski racer. She competes in all alpine disciplines, with a focus on giant slalom and super-G. Brignone won the World Cup overall title in 2020, becoming the first Italian female to achieve this feat. She is also an Olympic and World Championship medalist.
World Cup leader Mikaela Shiffrin was unable to defend her world title after missing a gate at the end of the second run, but the American took it in stride.
“I’m happy with my ride. I just rushed for a second at the end. The gates are a very short distance from each other and any mistake is fatal. But I know how I moved on the course and I’m happy with that”, said Mikaela Shiffrin.
