The Kenyan middle-distance runner Faith Kipyegon set a new world record in the women’s 1,500m at the Diamond League Athletics tournament in Florence, Italy. Faith Kipyegon clocked 3:49.11 min in the event, knocking almost by a second the previous best of 3:50.07 min set by Ethiopian athlete Genzebe Dibaba in 2015.

The record adds to the rich collection of the 29-year-old Faith Kipyegon, who has two Olympic gold medals in the 1,500m, as well as two world titles from 2017 and 2022, a Commonwealth Games gold medal from 2014 and three Diamond League titles.

Faith Kipyegon attacked in the last 300m and finished with a big lead over the British runner Laura Muir, who achieved season best of 3:57.09 min, and Australian athlete Jessica Hull, and after the finish she received the congratulations of all her competitors.

“I’m so happy for Faith”, said Laura Muir. “I would have liked to be closer to her, but for the first race of the season I performed decently. I have never run the first 800m as fast as I am now”, added the British athlete.

The Ethiopian athlete Sembo Almayew triumphed in the women’s 3000m steeplechase with 9:00.71 min. The Kenyan Jackline Chepkoech, remained with the silver, while another Ethiopian athlete Zerfe Wondemagegn was third in the event.
