Faith Kipyegon is still a silver medalist in the 5,000 and Nadia Battocletti remains fourth

The final of the women’s 5,000m at the Paris 2024 Olympics brought many emotions and twists, and for a short time two of the finalists – Faith Kipyegon and Nadia Battocletti – were both happy and unhappy.

In the original version of the final, Beatrice Chebet won the title with 14:28.56 min, Faith Kipyegon finished second with 14:29.60 min, Sifan Hassan third with 14:30.61 min, and European champion Nadia Battocletti finished fourth with a new Italian national record of 14:31.64 min.

After a contest from Italy, Faith Kipyegon was first disqualified for a collision with Gudaf Tsegay and Nadia Battocletti moved into third place and briefly looked like a bronze medalist.

A counter-contest by the Kenyan team followed and after a re-examination of the run, the classification was reverted to its original form, leaving Faith Kipyegon with the silver and Nadia Battocletti out of the top three.
