The Ballon d’Or awards ceremony could be better planned as the England women national players cannot attend, complained Georgia Stanway. The ceremony in Paris took place last night and England have a Nations League match against Belgium today.
“It’s a shame we can’t attend”, said Georgia Stanway, who plays for Bayern Munich and the national team. “If the event had been better planned, it would have allowed many contestants to attend”, added she,
The 24-year-old English football player is among the nominees for the Ballon d’Or in 2023, with her compatriots Mary Earps, Millie Bright and Rachel Daly from the team that became world runner-up and winner of the European title also on the list. They talked to each other and came to the conclusion that “it would be fairer in the future if the ceremony is not the night before an official match”.
Not being able to attend the ceremony at the Chatelet Theater in the French capital is disappointing because “it’s probably a once-in-a-lifetime chance. We don’t know if we’ll be nominated again. It was an opportunity to be there and feel like stars among stars”, said she.
The Spain team, which is the world champion, will meet the Swiss team on Tuesday. The Spanish midfielder Aitana Bonmati is the favorite for the Ballon d’Or, which has been won by her teammate in Barcelona and the national team, Alexia Putellas, for the past two years.
