England won the title of the Women’s Euro 2022

England women football champion

England won the title of the Women’s Euro 2022 at home. In the final played on Wembley Stadium, the women’s team of England achieved a victory with 2:1 over Germany after extra time and thus fulfilled their dream of triumphing on their home ground, and in front of a record audience of 87,192 spectators.

Thus, for the first time in history, regardless of whether men or women, England is the European football champion. Unlike the men’s team, which a year ago lost the European final against Italy at Wembley Stadium, their colleagues from the women’s national team successfully completed their task and won the “home” European Championship. It even came against tournament title-holder Germany, whose women’s squad became continental champions in eight of the previous ten editions of the championship. Germany won precisely against England in the final in 2009 with 6:2, but now the “Three Lions” took their revenge, although with a much more modest result. The English women lost another final in the first edition in 1984, when Sweden won on penalties due to 1:1 draws in the two matches between them.

Germany, who had only won their previous five matches in the tournament, had to play without their top scorer Alexandra Popp, who was injured in the pre-match warm-up. Either way, England deservedly lifted the European Cup after recording only successes in their six matches in the competition.

The English women started better and made several accurate shots, which were saved by the German goalkeeper Merle Frohms. However, in the 25th minute, Germany came close to a goal in a scramble after a corner, but Mary Earps managed to get hold of the ball. In the 38th minute, Ellen White shot from a good position but sent the ball just over the goal.

In the 48th minute, Tabea Wassmuth made a dangerous raid, but her shot ended up right in the arms of the British goalkeeper Mary Earps. Just two minutes later, the visitors had another good chance to score, but Lina Magull’s shot went wide. That’s how it came to the 62nd minute when Keira Walsh played a wonderful lead pass to Ella Toone, who opened the scoring in favor of the “Three Lions” with a passing shot.

Their opponent immediately stepped up and in the 66th minute hit the post after Lina Magull’s powerful strike. However, she was flawless in the 79th minute when she successfully finished off a good attack by her team for a 1:1 draw and sent the match into extra time.

In them, the hosts still managed to score a winning goal, which happened in the 110th minute. Then, with a cross from a corner, the reserve Chloe Kelly managed to get the ball into the goal and threw the “Wembley” stands into ecstasy.
