The 2021 US Open tennis champion Emma Raducanu became the next tennis player to withdraw from the strong WTA 1000 China Open hard court tournament in Beijing with a prize fund of nearly 9 million EUR.
The British tennis player announced that the reason for her decision was a leg injury. Emma Raducanu has battled various injuries since winning the title in New York in 2021 and spent most of last season recovering from ankle and wrist operations.
The 21-year-old British tennis talent crashed out of the quarter-finals of the tournament in Seoul on Saturday after going down after the first set of her match against Daria Kasatkina (Russia).
“I have sprained ligaments in my leg which, unfortunately, need more time to recover. This means I cannot play in Beijing, but I hope to be back on the court as soon as possible”, said Emma Raducanu.
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina, world’s number one Iga Swiatek and three-time Grand Slam finalist Ons Jabeur decided to skip the competition in Beijing, which will be held from September 25 to October 6.
