Emma Raducanu underwent ankle surgery as part of treatment for several health problems. The 2021 US Open champion has been dealing with a series of injuries lately, and a few days ago she had an operation on her hand, which was the immediate reason for her withdrawal from the schedule of the tennis tournament in Madrid.
Earlier this week, the 20-year-old British tennis player revealed that she will have minor procedures on both hands and her left ankle in a bid to solve her problems once and for all. But that comes at a price, and in all likelihood, once surgery and rehab time is added up, she will miss the entire grass season, including Wimbledon.
On Friday, in a live stream on her Instagram account, she appeared from her hospital bed, confirming that the ankle surgery was now done. She also shared a photo of herself in a wheelchair, her left ankle bandaged, along with the caption “2/3” followed by a smiley face and a heart emoji.
“I just had surgery on my ankle, so two of the three operations are done. There is one left, but not in a week’s time”, said Emma Raducanu.
The Briton, who is the world’s No 85 in the women’s rankings, had endured an almost full season on and off, with WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open in March followed by first-round exits in WTA 1000 Miami Open and WTA 500 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix In Stuttgart.
After undergoing the first operation on her right hand, Emma Raducanu wrote: “The last ten months have been difficult for me. I did everything I could to deal with the pain and play. Since the end of last year, I have significantly reduced the loads, missed weeks of training, even ended the season early in an attempt to heal. Unfortunately, it was not enough”.
“It hurts me that I will miss the summer tournaments, but I can no longer postpone solving my physical problems”, adds also Emma Raducanu.
