Emma Navarro (USA) achieved a surprising but well-deserved victory over her compatriot Coco Gauff in a Round of 16 match at Wimbledon. Emma Navarro prevailed by 2-0 (6:4, 6:3) in 74 minutes and many already see her as a favorite for the title after Iga Swiatek (Poland) crashed out in the previous round and Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) withdrew from the tournament due to injury.
In the quarterfinals, Emma Navarro will face Roland Garros finalist Jasmine Paolini. The balance between the two so far is 3-0 in favor of the American player.
For Emma Navarro, this will be the first quarterfinal at Wimbledon, and Coco Gauff has not yet reached this stage.
“I don’t have many words, but I am really pleased and grateful to play on the Central Court in a tournament with such frosty traditions. It is an honor for me and I want to thank everyone present in the stands. I can’t wait for the next match”, said Emma Navarro after the victory.
Coco Gauff could not cope with the aggressive game from the bottom of the court of her rival. At the end of the first set, Emma Navarro returned a strong serve and then hit a forehand winner to take the lead.
The 23-year-old American tennis player made a break for 3:1 in the second set and did not lose the initiative. The match was over in one hour and 16 minutes, with Navarro being much more efficient on her first serve and not committing a single double fault.
“I was very aggressive. Coco is an amazing tennis player and has already achieved amazing things in her career. I played against her strengths the best way I could and I’m happy with my performance”, added Emma Navarro.
