With her gold medal in the women’s 4×100m freestyle relay at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the Australian swimmer Emma McKeon won her 10th gold medal, equalizing Susie O’Neill, Ian Thorpe, and Leisel Jones for the most gold medals in Commonwealth Games history.
All four athletes are Australian nation swimmers, meaning Emma McKeon is tied for the most gold medals won by an Australian, as well as the most gold medals won by a swimmer. With her current medal, Emma McKeon has a total of 15 Commonwealth Games medals – 10 gold, 1 silver, and 4 bronze. It should be noted that a large number of these medals have come from relays, with her owning 8 gold medals from relays alone.
The rest of the week, Emma McKeon still has several events, including the 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m butterfly, plus the 4×100m freestyle medley relay, giving her plenty of opportunities to build on. She is in a position to challenge shooters Phillip Adams and Michael Gault for the most Commonwealth Games medals of all time as they each currently have 18.
En route to her record gold medal, Emma McKeon anchored the Australian women’s 4×100m freestyle relay with a time of 52.04 sec, leading the team to victory.
Emma McKeon’s achievement comes just a year after a historic 2020 Olympic Games in which she won 7 medals en route to becoming the most decorated Australian Olympian of all time and the most decorated female athlete from a single Olympic Games.
