Dmitry Tursunov has announced that he has decided not to continue coaching former US Open champion Emma Raducanu after her trial period ends. The two can’t agree on some things and there are “red flags” that he can’t ignore.
Emma Raducanu won the title at the US Open 2021 but has since fallen to 76th in the WTA world rankings.
The 19-year-old British tennis player has no permanent coach after splitting with German Torben Beltz in April and was working with Dmitry Tursunov for some time this year.
However, the Russian left Emma Raducanu’s camp after the end of the trial period and is currently training Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.
“I would have left Emma regardless of whether or not I had another competitor. We didn’t agree on some things and there were red flags that I couldn’t ignore”, said Dmitry Tursunov in an interview. “The trial ended at the US Open, but I stayed around to see if I could make a difference. She’s great, works very hard and doesn’t think or act like a superstar. It was a tough decision to walk away from a competitor who I like and respect”, added the Russian tennis coach.
Emma Raducanu withdrew from the WTA 250 Transylvania Open earlier this month with a wrist injury but is expected to play next month in the finals of the Billie Jean King Cup.
