Dayana Yastremska eliminated the 7th-seeded Marketa Vondrousova at the start of the Australian Open

Dayana Yastremska AO 2024

Dayana Yastremska (Ukraine) presented the first big surprise among the women at the Australian Open. The Ukrainian qualifier eliminated the seventh-seeded Marketa Vondrousova (Czech Republic) more than convincingly by 2-0 (6:1, 6:2).

Dayana Yastremska is a former world’s No 21, but had to go through qualifying in Melbourne this year. She needed less than an hour to defeat the reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. The Czech made only 5 winners and committed 7 double faults. She was punctured a total of 5 times and left the race.

The 4th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA) was also convincing at the start of the Australian Open. The American defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova (Slovakia) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:0), and in the second round she will compete with her compatriot Caroline Dolehide.

Cori Coco Gauff was very effective on the return, and also allowed Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to make only two winners.

The 23rd-seeded Anastasia Potapova and the 17th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova, both of Russia, are also out of the tournament, losing to Kaja Juvan (Slovenia) by 0-2 (1:6, 4:6) and Laura Siegemund (Germany) by 1-2 (2:6, 6:3, 6:7), respectively.

Tatjana Maria (Germany) advanced to the second round of the Australian Open after defeating Camila Osorio (Colombia) by 2-1 (7:5, 6:7, 6:4), as well as Rebeka Masarova (Spain), who eliminated Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).

The Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk defeated Claire Liu (USA) by 2-1 (6:3, 4:6, 6:1), while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (Russia) eliminated Donna Vekic (Croatia) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:4).

Jasmine Paolini (Italy) won her match versus Diana Shnaider (Russia) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4), while the wild card McCartney Kessler (USA) defeated qualifier Fiona Ferro (France) by 2-1 (3:6, 6:3, 6:2).
