Danka Kovinic upsets Emma Raducanu in the second round of the AO 2022

Montenegro’s tennis player Danka Kovinic made a big surprise in the women’s second round of the Australian Open, defeating the US Open champion and 17th-seeded Emma Raducanu.

The 98th in the world Danka Kovinic won in three sets – 2-1 (6:4, 4:6, 6:3), after 2:36 hours of play and thus became the first representative of Montenegro in the history to reach the 1/16 finals of a tournament from The Grand Slam.

The match was highly contested, but the 19-year-old British sensation failed to show her best due to an injury to the arm of the hand holding the rocket.

The two exchanged one set, and in the third decisive set, Danka Kovinic was visibly more stable in her performances and managed to take the victory.

“Beating a tennis player who has won a Grand Slam title is incredible”, said the 27-year-old Montenegrin after the most memorable victory of her career.

“I had hand problems before the game. Some people on my team thought I might not have to play today, but I wanted to go out and try to fight”, said Emma Raducanu. “I think it’s a useful experience for me. I discovered things about myself and my game that I didn’t know before. I can get positive even from this game”, added the US Open 2021 champion.
