Cori Coco Gauff won the title of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open

The American tennis player Cori Coco Gauff won the title of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open tennis tournament in Cincinnati (USA) with a prize fund of 2,788,468 USD.

In the final, the 7th-seeded Cori Coco Gauff defeated Roland Garros finalist Karolina Muchova (Czech Republic) by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4) in nearly two hours of play.

The 19-year-old American tennis talent won her first WTA 1000 title and picked up her second trophy in August after trimphing at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open and third overall of the season. She became the first teenager to win three tournaments in one season since Bianca Andreescu in 2019 and the first with five career titles since Caroline Wozniacki in 2009.

Cori Coco Gauff is the fourth American champion in Cincinnati, joining Lindsay Davenport, Serena Williams and Madison Keys. She will move up one spot in the WTA rankings to world’s No 6.

Cori Coco Gauff broke three times her opponent but also lost her serve twice in the first set. In the second set, she led by 5:2, and in the eighth game she served for success, but wasted three match points and Karolina Muchova reached a break. However, the American had no problems after that and in the tenth game she ended the match with her fourth chance.

Despite the defeat, Karolina Muchova will debut in the top 10 of the world rankings.
