Cori Coco Gauff was knocked out in the third round of the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s tennis tournament

The second-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA) was knocked out in the third round of the Olympic women’s tennis tournament. The American tennis player lost by 0-2 (6:7, 2:6) to Donna Vekic (Croatia) in exactly two hours.

Cori Coco Gauff led with a break and 5:2 in the first set, but she hesitated on her own opening shot and it came to a tiebreak. In it, the American tennis player missed two set points and lost dramatically with 7:9.

In the second set, the Croatian was leading 3:2 and 40-30 when Cori Coco Gauff hit a shot and one of the referees signaled the end of the game, and the ball had not yet hit the ground. The point was awarded to Donna Vekic, and Coco Gauff interrupted the game saying she “felt robbed”.

The break of more than five minutes also worked for Donna Vekic and the American reached three break points, but she was unable to take advantage of them and the Croatian congratulated herself with ultimate success after 6:2.

In the next round, the opponent of the 13th-seeded Donna Vekic, will be Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine) who made a fantastic comeback against Maria Sakkari (Greece) to win by 2-1 (4:6, 7:6, 6:4).

Angelique Kerber advanced ahead after success with 2-0 (6:4, 6:3) against Leylah Fernandez (Canada). The tournament is the last for the 36-year-old German tennis player, who will end her competitive career after the Paris Games. Angelique Kerber, who hit 22 winners and 12 unforced errors, celebrated the ultimate success after a total of 11 breaks in an hour and 25 minutes on court.

In the next round, the German will face Qinwen Zheng (China), who made a comeback against Emma Navarro (USA) after a dramatic 2-1 (6:7, 7:6, 6:1) victory in three hours and 11 minutes.

Danielle Collins (USA) also qualified for the quarter-finals after a 2-1 (6:0, 4:6, 6:3) success over Camila Osorio (Colombia). In the third set, the 8th-seeded American player made three breaks to just one for the Colombian and ended the match after 2 hours and 13 minutes on her first opportunity.

Danielle Collins will face world’s number one Iga Swiatek (Poland).
