The 2023 US Open champion Cori Coco Gauff (USA) defeated Ons Jabeur (Tunisia) by 2-0 (6:0, 6:1) in her first match from the WTA Finals in Cancun (Mexico). The American tennis player needed less than an hour to close the match, giving only one game to her opponent.
In the match, Cori Coco Gauff made 1 ace and 3 double faults, against 2 aces and only one double fault for her opponent. Although the American player was less accurate in the first serve she won 81% of the points on her first serve and scored 16 winners. On the other hand, Ons Jabeur made 27 unforced errors
This is the first win for Cori Coco Gauff at the WTA Finals, as last season in Fort Worth she recorded six losses at singles and doubles. This is her eighth success over the Top 10 women tennis players for the year. Only her next opponent, Iga Swiatek, has more wins.
At the WTA Finals in Cancun, Cori Coco Gauff plays her first tournament since releasing her coach Pere Riba following the WTA 1000 China Open.
“Unfortunately, it was not my decision. But we had to end our partnership. If it was up to me, I would be happy for him to be here. But you know, different things happen in life”, commented Cori Coco Gauff.
Cori Coco Gauff makes a fantastic season, as she is currently world’s No 3. She started the year by winning the title at the WTA 250 ASB Classic and continue by reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, semi-finals of the WTA 1000 Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open. At the 2023 French Open / Roland Garros she reached the quarter-finals, which gave a wonderful start of the summer, winning the titles at the WTA 500 Mubadala Citi DC Open and WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open, as well as reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 500 Rothesay International Eastbourne and the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 Canadian open (Rogers Cup). But she continued even better by winning the title at the US Open and reaching the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open.
