The American tennis talent Cori Coco Gauff qualified for the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000 China Open tennis tournament in Beijing after retiring of the former world’s number one Naomi Osaka (Japan) at 1-1 (3:6, 6:4) due to injury.
The Japanese, who won the competition in 2019, was leading 6:3, 4:3 with a break in the second set when she suffered back pain. She lost the next three games, committing 12 unforced errors, and decided to retire without even starting the third set.
In the quarterfinals, Cori Coco Gauff will face the Ukrainian Yulia Starodubtsewa, who won by 2-0 (7:5, 6:0) over the 10th-seeded Anna Kalinskaya (Russia).
In the other quarter-final, Paula Badosa (Spain) will face Zhang Shuai (China). The Spanish tennis played eliminated the second-seeded Jessica Pegula (USA) after 2-0 (6:4, 6:0), while Zhang Shuai defeated Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2).
