The 3rd-seeded Cori Coco Gauff (USA) eliminated Veronika Kudermetova (Russia) after 2-0 (7:6, 6:2) to qualify for the quarter-finals of the WTA 1000 China Open.
The American tennis player faced any difficulty only in the first set, which passed through several turnovers and tiebreak. At the very beginning of the set, Cori Coco Gauff took a lead by 3:0 after a break, but her opponent returned the break and reduced the lead of 3:2. The American player registered another break to lead by 4:2, but after 3 consecutive games for Veronika Kudermetova, she turned over the result to 5:4 in her favor and even served for the set. In the very tough 10th game, Cori Coco Gauff saved four set points, before succeeded to return the break and stay in the set, equalizing to 5:5. Thus, the set entered into a tiebreak, in which Cori Coco Gauff made just one mini-break more than her opponent and won by 7-5.
The second set was under the total domination of the American tennis player who took a lead of 4:0 after two breaks. This proved to be enough for her to close the set at 6:2 and to win the match.
In the quarter-finals of the tournament, Cori Coco Gauff will face the winner between Maria Sakkari (Greece) and Xinyu Wang (China).
In another match from the day, Caroline Garcia (France) did not faced any difficulties with Anhelina Kalinina (Ukraine), defeating her by 2-0 (6:3, 6:2). In the next round the French tennis player will face the second-seeded Iga Swiatek (Poland).
