American teenager Cori Coco Gauff advanced to the US Open semi-finals for the first time in her career with a convincing 2-0 (6:0, 6:2) victory over the 20th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia).
Cori Coco Gauff’s next opponent will be Karolina Muchova (Czech republic), who defeated Sorana Cirstea (Romania) by 2-0 (6:0, 6:3).
Jelena Ostapenko won in straight sets in the last match with Cori Coco Gauff at the Australian Open in January, but today was far from a repeat of the triumph. The Latvian made 2 double faults and 36 unforced errors, while her opponent scored 13 winners and 4 aces.
Cori Coco Gauff closed the first set in after 21 minutes of play.
Jelena Ostapenko won her first game in the match at the start of the second set and did it with a break, but the Latvian lost both her serves at the start for 1:2. She took another game for 2:3 and the rest of the set was dominated by Cori Coco Gauff. The American won three games in a row and finalized the victory on the third match point.
It was Cori Coco Gauff’s 10th straight win of the summer, tying her previous longest streak. After becoming the first American teenager to reach the quarter-finals of the US Open, she is now the first since 2001 to reach a semifinal. The author of both achievements is the legendary Serena Williams.
