CoCo Vandeweghe won the title of the WTA 125 Thoreau Tennis Open in Concord

CoCo Vandeweghe

The American Colleen “CoCo” Vandeweghe won the title of the WTA 125 Thoreau Tennis Open in Concord after defeating the 2nd-seeded Bernarda Pera with 2-1 (6:3, 5:7, 6:4).

The final match of the WTA 125 Thoreau Tennis Open started equally with each of the playing winning their service games. However, CoCo Vandeweghe took a lead after a break in the 4th game, defended it at her own serve and then registered another break to close the set of 6:3.

The second set was moving similarly. CoCo Vandeweghe received a match point at 5:4 at the service of Bernarda Pera but failed to complete it and finally, her opponent won the game. This destroyed her game a little bit and in the next game Bernarda Pera registered a break, which gave her an advantage and she won the set by 5:7 to equalize.

However in the third set, despite the fatigue, CoCo Vandeweghe was more concentrated and in the 10th game received another match point at the service of Bernarda Pera and this time did not miss to close the set with 6:4 and the match with 2-1.

This is the third WTA title for the 30-years-old American CoCo Vandeweghe, who is playing with a wildcard to the WTA 125 Thoreau Tennis Open. A former Junior US Open champion and top 10 singles player, she has also won two WTA titles, both at the Rosmalen Grass Court Championships in Den Bosch. In 2017, she reached two Grand Slam semifinals and the final of the WTA Elite Trophy to move into the top 10 for the first time. She reached her career-high singles ranking of world No 9 on January 15, 2018.

CoCo Vandeweghe also won the title in doubles in the same tournament. In the final, the American-Russian couple CoCo Vandeweghe/Varvara won versus the Thai-Japanese couple Peangtarn Plipuech/Moyuka Uchijima by 2-0 (6:3, 7:6).
