German speed skater Claudia Pechstein will become the first woman in history to compete in eight Winter Olympics. She was officially included in the team of Germany for the upcoming games in Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.
The 49-year-old Claudia Pechstein is the most successful German athlete from the Winter Olympics with five gold, two silver, and two bronze medals. She has to take part in the mass start of speed skating in China.
Claudia Pechstein made her debut at the Albertville 1992 Olympics and failed to qualify for Vancouver 2010 Olympics amid a battle against punishment for questionable blood counts that lasted for years.
Claudia Pechstein was among the top 20 athletes announced by the German Olympic Sports Confederation for the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics from February 4th to 20th. The others are four other speed skaters, five skaters, and a 10-member sled team, led by three-time Olympic champion Felix Loch.
The German conference also announced a team of 35 people in ice hockey, without giving names. Coach Toni Soderholm has asked not to select individual players due to possible coronavirus cases or injuries among players.
The second announcement of the German Olympics team is scheduled for January 18. At the last Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang 2018, Germany participated with 150 athletes who won 31 medals, 14 of them gold.
