Caroline Wozniacki qualified for the second round of the WTA 1000 Miami Open

Former world’s number one Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark) started her participation at the WTA 1000 Miami Open with a straight-set win over Clara Burel (France). The Danish tennis player won the match by 2-0 (6:1, 6:4) in 78 minutes to qualify for the next round of the Masters’ tennis tournament with a prize money of 8.77 million USD.

Caroline Wozniacki qualified for the second round in Miami for the 13th time in her 13 main draw appearances. This week, she begins her 95th career WTA 1000 Main Draw appearance. Only Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (WTA No 108) and Petra Kvitova (WTA No 103) have more than her.

After a three-year absence from tennis, during which time she gave birth to her children Olivia and James, Caroline Wozniacki returned to action last summer. The 2018 Australian Open champion has already climbed the rankings to her current WTA No 129.

Diana Shnaider (Russia) ended Venus Williams’ record of 22 appearance in Miami, defeating the three-time champion by 2-0 (6:3, 6:3) in 79 minutes.

Venus Williams, 43, is the oldest player on the WTA main draw for 2024, while Diana Shnaider, 19, is one of six teenagers competing this year. Venus Williams was playing her 85th main-draw match in Miami, another tournament record (this time shared with her sister Serena), while for Diana Shnaider it is the first since losing at the start of qualifying on her debut last year.

In other matches, Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) defeated Ana Bogdan (Romania) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:4), and Laura Siegemund (Germany) eliminated Aleksandra Krunic (Serbia) by 2-1 (4:6, 6:2, 6:2).

Earlier, Clara Tauson (Denmark) eliminated Caroline Dolehide (USA) after 2-1 (6:3, 3:6, 6:2), while Peyton Stearns (USA) defeated Yafan Wang (China) by 2-0 (6:2, 6:3), and Daria Saville (Australia) won her match versus Shuai Zhang (China) by 2-1 (6:4, 2:6, 6:4).

Chinese players Yue Yuan and Xinyu Wang also qualified for the second round of the tournament after a straight-set victories Anna Blinkova (Russia) and Hailey Baptiste (USA) by 2-0 (6:4, 6:2) and Xinyu Wang (China) eliminated
