French tennis player Caroline Garcia defeated the 2nd-seeded Maria Sakkari in the second round of the WTA 1000 Western & Southern Open. The French player won by 2-1 (7:6, 6:7, 6:1) in a match that lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes.
The first set was running without breaks, while Caroline Garcia had two break points – one in the 8th set and one in the 12th set. However, Maria Sakkari saved them and turned the set into a tiebreak, which the French tennis player won by 7-2.
In the second set, Maria Sakkari first broke the service of Caroline Garcia in the 4th game of the set, but the French tennis player returned in the 7th game of the set. Thus, the set went again into a tiebreak, which this time was won by Maria Sakkari by 8-6 and thus the match was equalized.
The third set, however, was under the total dominance of Caroline Garcia, who won it by 6:1 and qualified for the next round, where she will face Elise Mertens.
Shelby Rogers also qualified for the next round after the withdrawal of Amanda Anisimova.
The 2nd-seeded Anett Kontaveit also moved ahead and qualified for the third round after defeating Tereza Martincova by 2-1 (3:6, 7:5, 6:4). In the next round, she will face Shuai Zhang, who defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova by 2-0 (6:3, 6:4).
