Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu tore two ligaments in her left ankle at the WTA 1000 Miami Open tournament and it is uncertain when the former US Open champion will return to the court.
The world’s No 31 was forced to withdraw from her fourth-round match against Ekaterina Alexandrova (Russia), leaving the court in a wheelchair screaming in pain.
The 22-year-old Canadian reached the world’s No 4 in the WTA rankings in 2019 but has since struggled with a series of injuries.
“Results show that I’ve torn two ligaments in my left ankle”, wrote Bianca Andreescu on social media. “It’s tough to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could’ve been much worse!! I’m going to take it day by day, and I am optimistic that with the right work, rehab, and preparation, I’ll be back on court soon. Rehab process has already started and will continue to give updates. Love you all”, added she.
Bianca Andreescu also withdrew in the semi-finals of the Thailand Open in February with a shoulder injury. She is still looking for her first title since the 2019 US Open.
