The 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu has withdrawn from this year’s edition of the tournament due to injury.
The Canadian tennis player, who is world’s No 51, is experiencing back pain that will not allow her to participate in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year. Her spot in the main draw will be filled by a “lucky loser” or qualifier.
Bianca Andreescu, 23, was scheduled to face Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko in the first round of the tournament.
Paula Badosa (Spain) also withdrew from the upcoming edition of the US Open as she keeps struggling with her back injury. It means that the Spaniard would miss three of the four majors this year. She took part in Wimbledon, where she retired from her second-round match against Marta Kostyuk.
“After struggling for many months to compete again, I am ending my season. Those of you who know me know how much I like to compete and how difficult it has been to make this decision”, wrote Paula Badosa in social networks “We have tried everything together with my team, but the pain is not letting me move forward. Thanks to the people who are still by my side in these hard times. See you next year, stronger than ever”, added she.
The US Open 2023 starts today.
