Tokyo 2020 Olympic tennis champion Belinda Bencic started the year with a convincing victory. The Swiss defeated the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia with 2-0 (6:3, 6:2) and qualified for the second round of the WTA 500 Sydney Classics, which is a warm-up before the Australian Open.
Belinda Bencic broke the opponent’s serve three times and won 83% of the 1st serve points, as well as 71% of the 2nd serve points. The Swiss player won the match in just over an hour.
In the second round, Belinda Bencic will face the Oceane Dodin (France), who defeated Giuliana Olmos (Mexico) with 2-0 (6:4, 6:1) for 76 minutes.
In the other matches, the local favorite Ajla Tomljanovic is also ahead after defeating Slovakian player Anna Karolina Schmiedlova 2-0 (6:2, 6:3) and will face in the second round the Spain’s Paula Badosa, who eliminated Jelena Ostapenko (Latvia).
Earlier, the Romanian player Elena Gabriela Ruse (WTA No 95), defeated Poland’s Magdalena Frech (WTA No 105) with 2-1 (6:2, 3:6, 6:4) and in the next round will face Anett Kontaveit.
