The Tokyo 2020 Olympics champion Belinda Bencic was knocked out in the first round of the WTA 500 San Diego Open tennis tournament with a prize pool of 780,637 USD.
At the start of the tournament, the 5th-seeded Belinda Bencic lost by 1-2 (3:6, 6:3, 2:6) to the qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus). The match lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes, with Belinda Bencic making a huge number of unforced errors and losing her serve six times.
In the second round, Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face another qualifier – Emma Navarro (USA), who won by 2-0 (7:5, 6:0) against Jasmine Paolini (Italy).
The former leader in the world rankings Karolina Pliskova (Czech republic) also dropped out of the tournament, losing to the Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina by 1-2 (6:7, 6:0, 3:6).

In the second round, the Ukrainian tennis player will meet another representative of the Czech Republic – the 4th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova.
Katie Volynets (USA) also advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating her compatriot Clervie Ngounoue by 2-1 (2:6, 6:4, 6:2), while Camila Osorio (Colombia) eliminated Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-1 (6:3, 1:6, 6:4).
