The Tokyo 2020 Olympics champion Belinda Bencic was knocked out in the first round of the WTA 500 San Diego Open tennis tournament with a prize pool of 780,637 USD.

At the start of the tournament, the 5th-seeded Belinda Bencic lost by 1-2 (3:6, 6:3, 2:6) to the qualifier Aliaksandra Sasnovich (Belarus). The match lasted 2 hours and 19 minutes, with Belinda Bencic making a huge number of unforced errors and losing her serve six times.

In the second round, Aliaksandra Sasnovich will face another qualifier – Emma Navarro (USA), who won by 2-0 (7:5, 6:0) against Jasmine Paolini (Italy).

The former leader in the world rankings Karolina Pliskova (Czech republic) also dropped out of the tournament, losing to the Ukrainian tennis player Anhelina Kalinina by 1-2 (6:7, 6:0, 3:6).

The match went through many turnovers, and Karolina Pliskova definitely has to regret. The Czech tennis player missed two set points in the first set with a score of 6:5 in her favor and Anhelina Kalinina’s service, and in the third set she was leading by 2:0. However, and despite losing the second set to nil, Anhelina Kalinina was able to show more concentration in the most important moments and win the match.

In the second round, the Ukrainian tennis player will meet another representative of the Czech Republic – the 4th-seeded Barbora Krejcikova.

Katie Volynets (USA) also advanced to the second round of the tournament, defeating her compatriot Clervie Ngounoue by 2-1 (2:6, 6:4, 6:2), while Camila Osorio (Colombia) eliminated Magdalena Frech (Poland) by 2-1 (6:3, 1:6, 6:4).
